LTC Derek F. Bartlett is a native of Frederick, Maryland. He commissioned as a Field Artillery officer upon graduating from Pennsylvania State University in 2008.
Following completion of the Officer Basic Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he began his career with the 101st Airborne Division (Rakkasans) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, serving as a Fire Support Officer. In 2009, he deployed to Combat Outpost Spera in Paktika Province, Afghanistan.
After attending the Captain’s Career Course, LTC Bartlett was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served as Battalion Fire Direction Officer, Battalion Fire Support Officer, Battalion S4, and Commander of Bulldog Battery, 1-319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment.
Upon completing command, he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Pennsylvania State University and was subsequently assigned to Eighth Army in Korea as an Operations Officer. After graduating from the Command and General Staff College (CGSC), he was assigned to Germany, where he served as Brigade Fire Support Officer, Battalion S3, and Battalion XO for the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.
He later served as Brigade S3 for the 2nd Multi-Domain Task Force, working closely with the Security Assistance Group–Ukraine for two years. Most recently, LTC Bartlett served as Deputy of the Operations Division within the Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office (JCO) from June 2024 to September 2025.
He is married to Anastasia, who currently serves with the 10th Mountain Division G2.
